East Midlands Railway (EMR) has unveiled a first look at their new Hitachi built bi-mode trains that the railway believe will transform customer experience.

The interior of EMR’s £400 million Aurora fleet features more seats and luggage space, modern interiors, air conditioning, free Wi-Fi, power sockets, USB ports at each seat and live passenger information.

EMR has described the new Wi-Fi system as ‘class-leading’ as it uses multiple sim cards to select the best possible signal for customers.

The trains will also be fitted with bespoke glass windows designed to allow signals to pass through allowing customers to benefit from better connections.

Rachel Turner, Head of New Trains at East Midlands Railway said: “We’re really excited to share new photos of the interiors of our bi-mode fleet as the fleet progresses through testing and towards being passenger-ready.   

“We have worked closely with Hitachi to ensure our trains offer customers the features and comfort they expect from a modern train.”

Additional benefits include coat hooks, well-sized seat back tables for all airline style seats and space to fit a cabin bag under each seat.

There will also be dedicated wheelchair spaces and bicycle storage.

EMR said they have worked closely with Derby-based design firm, DG DESIGN, refining FISA Lean seats to offer enhanced comfort and support.

The new Aurora fleet will be available on the Midland Main Line from 2025 and throughout 2026.
