East Midlands business leaders concerned about proposed M1 speed limit cut

09 January 2014/Categories: Industry News

A proposed reduction in the speed limit on part of the M1 has been met with a negative response by a local business group.

The Highways Agency wants to put a 60 mph speed limit in place between Junction 28 and Junction 35a between 07:00 and 19:00 in order to reduce pollution and congestion.

However, Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and Leicester Chambers of Commerce is concerned the move could have a negative impact on businesses, the Derbyshire Times reports.

"Logistics operators, hauliers, distributors and public transport operators would have to factor in longer journey times, which would increase costs," said spokesman Chris Hobson.

He added that the organisation is not convinced that reducing the speed limit on this stretch of the M1 would deliver the results the Highways Agency is hoping to see.

A consultation on the proposed changes opened earlier this week. Interested parties and stakeholders have until March 3rd to express their views on the plans.
