Peel Ports launches first recruitment drive as part of the expansion which will see 500 jobs created in Liverpool

02 April 2015/Categories: CILT, Industry News

Peel Ports has launched a recruitment campaign to hire the first tranche of the 500 jobs it will create by building a new £300m deep water container terminal in Liverpool.

As part of its ambitious growth strategy, Peel Ports is now looking to take on an extra 90 staff in a move that marks the beginning of its exciting plans to further develop the Port of Liverpool.

The vast majority of new jobs will be created in Liverpool with 75 new positions being created in the next three months alone – a move that will continue to increase the size of the workforce at the Port of Liverpool as well as bring vital new skills to its operations.

However, Peel Ports’ £300m investment to create the UK's most centrally located deep water container terminal is set to create around 500 direct jobs at the Port of Liverpool and 5,000 indirect jobs within the local supply chains.

Peel Ports is now calling on local people to register their details via its careers site as it gears up for a huge recruitment campaign. With more than 70% of the workforce at the Port of Liverpool living within a 10 mile radius of the port, Peel Ports is keen to ensure that as many jobs as possible continue to go to local people.

The construction of Liverpool2 will enable the port to handle more than 95% of the world’s largest container vessels, and double the port's capacity to 1.5m TEU (twenty foot equivalent units) a year.

The new jobs cover a diverse range of permanent positions including port operators, electricians, project managers, planners, marine officers, IT staff, sales executives, as well as new roles in finance and management.

In addition and as part of the wider recruitment drive, Peel Ports, a leading port group in the UK, is creating 15 new jobs at its terminals in Scotland, Kent, Lancashire and Ireland.

Howard Sloane, Group HR Director, Peel Ports, said: “These are very exciting times at Peel Ports as we begin to recruit colleagues that will operate one of the most technologically advanced container terminals in the UK.

“Our focus is on finding the best possible talent to join our organisation, and for the new jobs in Liverpool, we’d like as many recruits as possible to be from the Liverpool City Region.

“Like all successful organisations, we are looking for talented, motivated people and we believe being part of one of the most technologically advanced and strategically important logistics businesses in the UK will help us to attract them.

"Liverpool2 will revolutionise supply chains in the UK by bringing the world’s biggest ships back to Liverpool. Currently more than 90% of deep sea containers enter the UK through Southern ports but more than 50 per cent are delivered or originate in the northern half of the UK. Liverpool2 will make it more efficient and cost-effective for importers and exporters moving goods in and out of the Midlands, the north of England, Scotland, Ireland and Northern Ireland.

“Recruiting a talented and motivated workforce will help Peel Ports create a sea change in the way we import and export goods in Britain.

“At Peel Ports our standards are world-class and we have an employment offering to match this. In fact, in March Peel Ports was named Business of the Year at the first ever Mersey Maritime Industry Awards thanks to its recent investments at the Port of Liverpool and its commitment to supporting the growth of the region.”

Over the last two years Peel Ports has developed its employment package, investing in its employees well beyond the payroll.  To support this, all employees are offered the chance to take part in a Flexible Benefits scheme, which allows them to build a benefits package to suit their individual requirements and lifestyle. This includes an award winning Pension Scheme, healthcare cash plan and other benefits which can be ‘flexed’ to suit.
