David Pemberton runs Railway Paths Limited, established in 1998 in the wake of the privatisation of British Rail, with the grant of around 1000 hectares (or approximately 250 route miles) of ex-railway land. Within the DfT, the ex-railway estate not transferred to Network Rail is still sometimes referred to as the "burdensome estate". Yet over the last 25 years, Railway Paths has used it to create public benefit, and although a charity, manages the land as a commercial estate deriving income from rents, sales, ransom strips and servitudes.

The objective of Railway Paths is to lease its land for use as cycle paths. Its leaseholders (principally Sustrans and local authorities) pay £1 for the lease, but have the responsibility for constructing & maintaining the path, looking after the public, and managing the land. In return, Railway Paths manages circa 750 railway structures ranging from listed viaducts, bridges carrying national roads, and major tunnels, to tiny culverts. Of particular interest in Scotland, the talk will look at: North Water Viaduct (Montrose), Big Water of Fleet Viaduct (Galloway), development of landholdings in Paisley and Glasgow, and Loanhead to Millerhill (Edinburgh).

Warrington’s all-electric bus fleet is on the way

The process to replace Warrington’s Own Buses’ entire fleet of diesel buses to an “all electric bus fleet” is well underway. It will give residents of the town one of the biggest electric bus fleets of any town or city in the UK to date. 
Warrington’s Own Buses covers 85 per cent of the bus mileage in the borough, and the conversion of its entire fleet to all-electric supports Warrington’s ambitions to introduce greener, cleaner and more sustainable transport options throughout the borough.

The first batch of the state-of-the-art Volvo BZL Electric vehicles has recently entered service. These new yellow buses provide clean, near-silent, comfortable and efficient public transport. They are built to a high safety standard and comply with the toughest restrictions on emissions and noise.

Launched in 2021, the zero-tailpipe emissions vehicle features low interior noise, making it easier for passengers to talk to others or listen to music during the ride, with the driver also benefiting from a calm and quiet workspace. The silent propulsion also reduces noise for residents along the route.

The new buses are being housed and charged at the brand-new bus depot on Dallam Lane, delivered as part of Warrington’s Town Deal. The town’s green commitments involve the buses not only running on electricity, but this is charged by renewable energy. The 105 new buses will be powered by solar energy, charged on power generated by a council-owned solar farm.

The event includes presentations on the vision for an all-electric fleet, a new depot, the process to acquire the buses and the funding. The speakers will be Steve Hunter Transport for Warrington Service Manager at Warrington Borough Council and Ben Wakerley, Managing Director, Warrington’s Own Buses. The event includes a depot visit and a chance to see the new vehicles and their charging stations.

Re-introducing former transport infrastructure ignites strong passion both for and against. But as the economy and society evolves it is sensible to review. 

With this in mind The Restoring Your Railway Fund was established by the UK government in 2020 to restore previously closed rail lines. Including a £500 million commitment to supporting the development or delivery of over 45 schemes across England and Wales. Critics pointed out that this funding was a drop in the ocean and as it turns out the new government has decided to scrap the fund, sighting budgetary constraints

However, with the desire to reduce car dependency and drive growth in the economy does re-opening selected railways still form part of the longer-term transport plan for the UK.? And if so, how and what are the practicalities and considerations? Who decides and on what basis? What is the business, social and environmental case? The CILT East Midland Group is delighted to welcome 2 esteemed speakers to an event which will answer three key questions

Speakers:


Harry Burr,  Chair of the Board at Enroute, An impartial and independent voluntary transport research group. Harry will discuss how the rail industry advocates for expansion of these schemes with the idea of ‘restoration’ or ‘reconnection’ to build a strategic narrative around schemes.

Stephen Chaytow Leader of The Campaign for The Peak Line. A chartered accountant by trade and a passionate advocate of the plans to restore the Buxton to Matlock rail link in the Peak District
